There are a lot of kids out there that have no clue on how to deal with kids that are different.Now different doesn’t mean any thing special but they do stand out in a school full of “normal kids”. I feel that mainstreaming in many cases is correct for all involved.

Both sets of kids can benefit from the interaction that comes from these situations.

First off this gives the “normal kids” a sense of compassion for those that are different. They soon begin to realize that many different types of people make up the world. In schools were they do this many of the “normal” kids can be seen helping and protecting these kids. Warm and wonderful friendships come out of mainstreaming that would not have happened any other way. The main stream kids begin to grow in a whole new way that can only happen when they are exposed to different people. I have seen the “normal” kids come to the house of an wheel chair bound boy to take him with them on their many adventures.

Many a special needs child has blossomed when placed with the “normal kids” they now strive to do more than most would expect them to do. It gives them the drive to keep up as best they can with their friends. Most cases they end up doing far better than if left in self contained classes.

As for the disruptions that the “normal” kids experience in schools where this program is in effect, the disruptions are hardly noticeably. Yes there are times when the whole class will suffer from the disruptive child but even “normal” kids do this . The “normal” kids then learn to deal with this as they will do in the work place. If the schools handle it right it can be a benefit for all involved. But both the schools and parents have to work together to make public schools a place for all to attend and learn to best of their abilities.
